Level 9 Adventures - Information
--------------------------------

This adventure will run on:
* BBC Master
* BBC B+
* BBC B with sideways RAM or shadow RAM
  (you need both for pictures).

Sideways RAM
------------

The game will find most types of
sideways RAM and can use up to 6 banks.

(The first bank is used for program
storage, and the rest for UNDO buffers
and picture cache.)

RAM banks of less than 16K are ignored.

If the game does not find any RAM
banks, make sure that any read and
write protect switches are off.

Shadow RAM (BBC B only)
-----------------------

The game can use, and has been tested
on, the following shadow RAM boards:

     Aries B-32 Shadow RAM
     Computech Integra-B
     Solidisk 2 MEG 128K
     Watford 32K Shadow RAM

The game can probably use the following
boards, but we have not tested them:

     Aries B-20 Shadow RAM
     Solidisk 2 and 4 MEG 256K

(If you have a Solidisk 4 MEG board, it
is probably a good idea to run the game
at the 2 MEG clock speed.)

There is a slight chance that the game
might be able to use other shadow RAM
boards.

IMPORTANT. Please switch out the shadow
RAM board before running the game (so
it's plugged in but not active). Refer
to its manual if you have difficulties,
but the following will probably work:

   Aries B-32 Shadow RAM:
      *XOFF
      SHIFT-BREAK

   Computech Integra-B:
      *CONFIGURE OSMODE 0
      CTRL-SHIFT-BREAK

   Solidisk 2 MEG 128K:
      *SHADOW 1
      SHIFT-BREAK

   Watford 32K Shadow RAM:
      *RAMOFF
      SHIFT-BREAK

   Aries B-20 Shadow RAM:
      *XOFF
      SHIFT-BREAK

   Solidisk 2 and 4 MEG 256K:
      *SHADOW 1
      SHIFT-BREAK

If you have a shadow board that has
adverse effects on the game, eg garbled
pictures or bad UNDO positions, you can
run the game in a text-only mode by
typing the following instead of
SHIFT-BREAK:

      CTRL-BREAK
      *!BOOT2

Shadow RAM (BBC Master)
-----------------------

The BBC Master has a sophisticated
split-screen, with text below a picture
which can be slid up or down as you
want. However, the display timing is
quite critical and might be disrupted
if, for example, your BBC's clock is
running too fast or too slow (some
hardware add-ons could change this).

If the display persists in rolling or
does not give a still picture, either
type WORDS while in the game, or turn
the machine off and switch out the
sideways RAM banks by putting LINKS 18
and 19 WEST, before restarting the
game. This disables picture display.

BBC Compact
-----------

This game has not been tested on the
BBC Compact, but should run as if it
was a BBC Master. If the game does not
run properly, switch out all sideways
RAM banks and reload the game.

The disc will work with the DFS loaded
into a sideways RAM bank, however you
can copy the game to ADFS. See below
for instructions.

ADFS Conversion
---------------

The game will only work with the DFS,
but can be converted to use the ADFS on
the Master Series. There is a large
speed penalty if you run the game off
floppy discs using the ADFS filing
system.

Use the 'CopyFiles' utility to do this,
copying all the files of the game.

If you convert to ADFS, all files on
the game side except P.Title and any
P.Pic files must go in the '$' (root)
directory. The title and picture files
must go in a directory called '$.P'.

Double sided Disc Conversion
----------------------------

The game is supplied on a 'flippy'
disc but, if you have double sided
drives, you can copy the files to a
double sided disc. (You will then not
need to turn the disc over to see
the full set of pictures.)

Follow these instructions carefully!

For a double disc drive:

 1) Make sure the original disc is
    write-protected. (Sticky tabs over
    notches!)

 2) Have a newly formatted double-sided
80-track DFS disc in drive 1.

 3) Put the game disc in drive 0.

 4) Type..
*ENABLE (you may not need this)
       *BACKUP 0 1

 5) When this has finished, turn the
game disc over in drive 0.

 6) Type..
*ENABLE (you may not need this)
       *BACKUP 0 3

 7) When this has finished, put a
write-protect tab over the notch of
the new disc, put it in drive 0 and
    press SHIFT-BREAK.

For a single disc drive:

 1) Make sure the original disc is
    write-protected. (Sticky tabs over
    notches!)

 2) Have a newly formatted double-sided
    80-track DFS disc ready.

 3) Put the game disc in the drive,
    pictures side up.

 4) Type..
*ENABLE (you may not need this)
       *BACKUP 0 0
swapping the pictures disc and the
new disc over on the prompts.

 5) Put the new disc in the drive.

 6) Type..
*ENABLE (you may not need this)
       *BACKUP 0 1

 7) When this has finished, put the
game disc back, game side up.

 8) Type..
*ENABLE (you may not need this)
       *BACKUP 0 0
swapping the game disc and the new
    disc over on the prompts.

 9) When this has finished, put a
write-protect tab over the notch of
the new disc, put it in the drive
    and press SHIFT-BREAK.

Display Versions
----------------

You should get the following displays
on the following machines:

* Text only

BBC B with 16K sideways RAM
           or 20K shadow RAM
BBC B+ with no sideways RAM
BBC Master with all sideways RAM banks
           switched out

* Text and Pictures

BBC B with both 16K sideways RAM
           and 20K shadow RAM
BBC B+ with sideways RAM
BBC Master with one sideways RAM bank
           switched in

* Text and Sliding Pictures

BBC Master with two or more sideways
           RAM banks switched in

Extra Hardware
--------------

If you still encounter problems with
the game, it is probably a good idea to
remove or disable any extra hardware
attached to your machine.

Useful Tip
----------

It is a very good idea to switch your
machine off after running the game, as
your BBC may do some unexpected things
afterwards - especially the Master!

Happy Adventuring!
