LEADLIGHT:
SURVIVAL HORROR INTERACTIVE FICTION
FOR THE APPLE II COMPUTER
by Wade Clarke (C) 2010
Version 1.1 at IF Archive, November 18 2010
===================================

Leadlight came 14th out of 26 in the 2010 Interactive Fiction Competition and
won the Golden Banana of Discord.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
                            INTRODUCTION
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Leadlight is programmed in 8-bit Applesoft BASIC and assembly language. To play
it on a modern Mac or PC involves running it in an Apple II emulator.

The contents of a couple of directories in the IF Archive -- ActiveGS_Mac and
ActiveGS_PC -- are offered as a convenient means of quickly getting the game
running on an Intel OS X Macintosh or a Windows/Vista PC respectively.

However, the game can also be run by other means on older Macs, Linux systems,
in web browser-based emulators, and on real Apple II computers (of course!)

The file 'Leadlight_Player_Guide.pdf' is an illustrated manual for the game and
'leadlight_hints.pdf' is a coded hint sheet.

All players are also strongly encouraged to visit the Leadlight website --

http://leadlightgame.com

-- which is provided as a complete experience with additional artwork,
browser-based emulators for playing the game online, a FAQ, troubleshooting
advice and emulation instructions for every incarnation of the game.

** If you have played lots of interactive fiction before, please note that
Leadlight uses a two word parser: (VERB) (NOUN)

---------------------------------------------------------------------
THE TWO OUT-OF-THE-BOX EMULATION PACKS DESCRIBED
---------------------------------------------------------------------

To use one of the two out-of-the-box emulator packs, copy the relevant
directory for your system (ActiveGS_Mac or ActiveGS_PC) to your desktop, open
it up and double-click the 'ActiveGS' application inside it to launch the game.

** Note that Mac users of PPC or older model Macs cannot use the ActiveGS
emulator pack -- it requires an Intel processor.

For instructions on running Leadlight on all other systems, emulators and
computers, keep reading.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW DO I PLAY ON SETUPS NOT COVERED BY THE OUT-OF-THE-BOX
                          EMULATION PACKS?
---------------------------------------------------------------------

For as long as the website http://leadlightgame.com is available, its FAQ page
(http://leadlightgame.com/faq/faq.html) will continue to offer the most
complete and up-to-date instructions for running Leadlight on any OS or device.
You should visit it now. You can also play the game online there if you wish.

Of course, the raw game files are also stored on IF Archive to protect against
a theoretical future in which leadlightgame.com ceases to be, so below I
describe what these files are and provide a summary of how to use them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT ARE THE OTHER FILES INCLUDED HERE ON IF ARCHIVE AND
HOW DO I USE THEM TO PLAY THE GAME?
---------------------------------------------------------------------

'leadlight_1_1.2mg'

This file is a 3.5 inch floppy disk image of Leadlight, ideal for use on an
Apple IIGS emulator or computer. Just put the disk in drive 1 and boot the
emulator or computer.

'leadlight_boot.dsk'
'leadlight_game.dsk'

These two files are 5.25 inch floppy disk images of the game, ideal for use on
an Apple IIe emulator or computer. The boot disk must be placed in drive 1 and
the game disk in drive 2 before you turn on the emulator or computer.

At this time of writing in 2010, my recommendations of emulators to use to play
the game on the major OSes are as follows, based on ease of use and the fact
that all the following programs are free:

** For Intel Mac OS X: Use ActiveGS or Sweet16, both of which are Apple IIGS
emulators (use the 3.5 inch floppy)

** For pre-Intel Mac OS X: Use Sweet16, an Apple IIGS emulator (use the 3.5
inch floppy)

** For Windows/Vista: Use ActiveGS, the Apple IIGS emulator (use the 3.5 inch
floppy). If this doesn't work for any reason, use AppleWin, the Apple IIe
emulator (use the 5.25 inch floppies)

** For Linux: If you're using Wine, proceed as per Windows/Vista options.
Otherwise, you can go Linux-native by compiling KEGS, an Apple IIGS emulator
(use the 3.5 inch floppy) or LinApple, an Apple IIe emulator (use the 5.25 inch
floppies)

Sweet16 and KEGS also require that you supply your own copy of the Apple IIGS
hardware rom file before you will be able to use them. Either Rom01 or Rom03
will do.
