I'm going to a SAE congress in Detroit, MI in february. Last year I visited Kites & Fun Things in Plymouth, MI and bought a SkyLite Dancer. I had trouble finding any of the other kite stores listed in KiteLines :-(. This year I will stop in Chicago for 2 days on my way home. Could any of you help me with an adress for a kite store in Chicago worth visiting? My main intrest is dual-line stunt kites although I do fly single and quad- line kites as well. I'm thinking of bringing a kite home again this year too. I have noticed that the Prism Eclipse gets mentioned a lot on rec.kites. I picked up the review from the FAQ and it sounds great! I fly NSR's and Tracer's normaly (homemade: the european way) - and it sounds like the Eclipse might be right for me. Any opinons? I have only seen the kite in the 1994 Into The Wind catalog, is the price still around $160? Their telephone number is 708-359-2556. Their address is 6 South Brockway, Palatine IL 60067. The Kite Harbor is in downtown Chicago. Their phone and adrress is 312-321-5483 435 East Illinois Street, Chicago, IL 60611. They are in a building called North Pier. There is also K.R. Kites. Their address and phone is: 18027 South Dixie Highway, Homewood IL, (phone) 708-798-1122. They are also online but I do not have their netaddress. I believe that there are a few more but I do not have their address handy (I should mention Stanton Hobby- they are in the city limits on Milwaukee Ave and just south of Lawrence Ave.). This list should not be viewed as an endorsement of these establishments. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Mon, 6 Feb 1995 22:13:01 -1000 From: jeffherr@aol.com (JeffHerr) Message-Id: <3h7a2d$s3u@newsbf02.news.aol.com> Organization: America Online, Inc. If you don't mind traveling south of the city (you can take a simple 40m train ride - email me if you want details) a bit, try KR Kites in Homewood. They are also very small (and open only part time), but the owner, Kirk, has a very good selection. I have bought all my kites from him - and the friendly expertise is much appreciated. Kirk is also organizing the Homewood Kite Festival, which I believe is July 21-23. I will endorse some of them though. (smiley for humor-impaired.) I've been to Chicago Kite Company, The Kite Harbor, and Stanton Hobby shop. Can't speak about K.R. Kites, though, never been there. I recommend both Chicago Kite Company and The Kite Harbor. Both had helpful and very knowledgeable staff, which I think is essential in any specialized store. I go to The Kite Harbor more often because of ease of access by public transportation, while Chicago Kite Co. is really out in the 'burbs. Prices are very close, with Chicago Kite Co.'s sale items coming in under The Kite Harbor. Both stores were happy to suggest times and places to meet with people flying in the Chicago area. My luck hasn't been so great for the kite section of Stanton. Everytime I've been there (3-5 times.) none of the staff seemed to have a clue about kites. Selection was mediocre, and prices were no better than anywhere else. Maybe it's been my weekend timing, but I only go there to get parts or tools for other hobbies now. Hello Ken, If you are looking for a kite store in Chicago my recommendation is Kite Harbor at North Pier, 435 East Illinois Street, Chicago, IL 60611, phone 312-321-5483 (That's 321-KITES). Kite Harbor has been in business for 4 years and is under new ownership within the last year. They have the largest selection of kites and related gear in the city. They have 25 varieties of stunt kites on hand and hundreds of windsocks and single line kites. If they don't have it, they will get it...and they ship "worldwide." In addition to selection, Kite Harbor is willing to meet the best prices in the nation. Kite Harbor is staffed by helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly people. They also have full-service repair available. In addition, North Pier is a nice place to browse, shop, and eat. Don't miss it when in Chicago! _/ _/_/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/_/ _/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/_/ _/ _/_/__/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ jacques@interaccess.com _/ Pluto310@aol.com = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
