I'm headed for Houston on business in about two weeks. Are there any predictable winds or places recommended for flying that would warrant taking a couple of kites along on this trip? What about down in the Galveston area? Regular breezes along the Gulf? There are many good beach parks along the coast in Galveston run by the parks department. It's worth the small entrance fee as the beaches are well maintained. Realize it may be a 1/2 to 1 hour drive to Galveston depending on where in the Houston area you are staying. My experience in Galveston has been high winds - 18 mph+. Also, in mid-August expect high heat and humidity. Watch out for tar balls on the beaches. I have a stack of Hyperkites, with permanent black stains from tar on a Galveston beach. :-( But otherwise, its a great place to fly. ;-) -- Rick Roberts ^^^^^ ///// Texas Instruments, Inc. \\\\\///// P.O.Box 869305, MS 8518 \\\XX/// Plano, Texas, 75086 \XXXX/ = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1993 15:46:48 -1000 From: dbell@lobby.ti.com (Dick Bell) Message-Id: <930810194648@dbell.dseg.ti.com> Organization: Texas Instruments Inc Subject: Re: Kite flying in Houston area? There will be plenty of Kites in the air and lots of other activities. (BBQ and Beer) The Skyriders have a hotline that you can call for flying fields in the Houston area 587-9559. The next scheduled fly after the 14 August Birthday will be August 22, and will be held at the Richey Road and North Bammel flying field. If you do not get to fly with the Skyriders...the following fields are flyable 1. Delmar Stadium (Off Mangum and 290) 2. American Plaza (290 and Gessner) 3. San Jacinto Monument (Hwy 225 and Battleground Road) 4. Challenger Park 5. Sam Houston Park (Downtown) 6. Galveston (Just about anywhere on the beach) 7. North Harris County College 8. Beltway 8 and 59 area 9. Sylvan Beach (LaPorte) 10. The favorite place...Richey Road and North Bammel OOP's...almost forgot..the birthday party will be held at H & H Ranch. The Ranch is at the intersection of Greens Road and 59. Hope this info helps you with your business trip. BTW, The winds have been GREAT so far this summer.
