IBM ANNOUNCES SOFTWARE MOTION VIDEO SUPPORT FOR OS/2 November 10, 1992 WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 10 . . . IBM today is announcing software motion video support for the OS/2* platform. This support is contained within IBM's Multimedia Presentation Manager/2* (MMPM/2) beta version which is now being made available to developers. Software motion video is a technology that provides digital video in a window on the desktop without a video overlay board. An audio card is required to play back the audio with the digital video. The MMPM/2 beta contains a generic video player called Matinee'*. This interfaces with an installable video algorithm manager, providing playback of assorted compressed video formats. While MMPM/2 will ultimately support multiple video compressions algorithms, the beta package contains: Ultimotion*, an IBM-developed video compression algorithm, optimized for high quality software video playback; and Photomotion*, a compression algorithm optimized for low-power CPU's. In the beta version is a capture tool for movie creation and a large number of sample movies. IBM is also working with Intel to support the video compression algorithm family, Indeo** video technology, Intel's real time scalable video solution. Indeo video provides playback under Matinee' in a software-only environment, or under the Actionmedia** II card in a hardware-assisted environment. While the quality of Ultimotion makes it the premier digital video software for title publishing and application development, the networking and cross platform qualities of Indeo video make it a logical choice for a networked business environment. "We are pleased to be providing this advanced multimedia function in OS/2," said Lee Reiswig, Assistant General Manager of IBM's Personal Systems Programming. "The robustness of OS/2 has allowed us to provide very reliable and very high-quality software motion video with unsurpassed audio and video synchronization." These new features of MMPM/2 will be made generally available when the product meets customer requirements as identified by the beta users. * Indicates trademark or registered trademark of the IBM Corporation. ** Indicates trademark or registered trademark of the Intel Corporation.
