# GSRC is best used as a "rolling-release" system, in which the user #
# stays up-to-date with the latest changes via a personal bzr #
# repository. Alternatively, every quarter, a snapshot is released, #
# which may be downloaded and used on its own. #
# #
# This file outlines the updates that have occurred between snapshot #
# releases. #
# #

* Changes in GSRC 2014.01.06

** Changes to the GSRC system

*** Info documentation is now properly managed.
Previously, info documentation for software installed by GSRC was
not properly merged into a "dir" file, making it difficult to
browse the documentation when several packages were installed.
GSRC now properly merges all the documentation into
$prefix/share/info/dir. In order to view this documentation with
your info browser, be sure to set the INFOPATH environment
    variable.

*** Install source code to a live directory.
Using the new "install-src" Make target, the source code for a
package can be installed to your GSRC system directory (i.e. /gnu
or $HOME/gnu) under the "src" sub-directory. This makes studying
the source code of GNU software releases even easier. You can use
the "uninstall-src" to remove it. Finally, the "install-src-p"
target can test whether the source code has already been
    installed.

*** Uninstall old versions of software.
When software is updated via GSRC, the old version remains
installed alongside the new version, while only the new version is
"stowed" and available to use (see the GSRC documentation for more
information). Running the "uninstall-pkg" target would only
remove the current version of the package, leaving the old
versions in place. Using the new "uninstall-pkg-old" and
"uninstall-src-old" targets, you can remove all but the current
    version of a package.

*** GSRC now checks for user and group dependencies.
Some programs require specific users or groups to be present on
the system in order to use them. GSRC will now check that the
required users/groups are present before installing software.

* Changes in GSRC 2013.04.06

** Changes to the GSRC system

*** GSRC features longer package descriptions for all GNU packages
GSRC is now perhaps the best means of learning about the wide variety
of software provided by GNU thanks to the new long package
descriptions. These are viewable via the "pkg-info" Make target.

*** GSRC provides a searchable package database in recfile format
In addition to the "gsrc" script, you can now search the packages via
the MANIFEST.rec file with GNU Recutils. If you have downloaded GSRC
via its source archive, this file should be included. If you have
cloned the GSRC source repository, you can build it with the
"manifest" Make target.

*** 3rd party dependencies are no longer provided
GSRC is not a full source distribution. Thus, all non-GNU packages
have been removed. Instead, GSRC will print a message when an
external package is required but not present on the user's system.

*** Trying to build a broken package now prints a warning first.
Unfortunately, not all GNU packages build correctly at present. To
acknowledge the known build failures, GSRC will print a message and
ask for confirmation before attempting to build such a package. This
also indicates that the GSRC maintainer is already aware of the
problem.

** Changes in GSRC packages

*** 23 packages have been added to GSRC since the last release.

*** 81 packages have been updated since the last release.

*** 5 builds that were previously broken have been fixed.

builds are counted as incomplete. Some packages have not yet made any
releases, which are also counted as incomplete. See TODO for more

* Changes in GSRC 2013.01.06

** Changes to the GSRC system

*** GSRC may now optionally redirect build output
All output during the build process may be redirected elsewhere via
the REDIRECT_OUTPUT variable in the file `gar.conf.mk'.

*** GSRC messages may now optionally be colorized
GSRC-specific messages may be (unobtrusively) colorized via the
USE_COLOR variable in the file `gar.conf.mk'. Alternatively, message
text delimiters (i.e. `==>' or `***' at the start of a line) may be
customized in the same file.

*** GSRC now supports alternate package configurations
Multiple configurations of a package may be available side-by-side via
the GARPROFILE variable, which is appended to a package's name. Thus,
you might have a package foo-1.0 as well as a different configuration
of it, foo-1.0-new-config. When you install the package, you simply
select which configuration you want by passing the GARPROFILE
variable.

*** Large GNU sub-projects now have their own directories
GNOME and GNUStep packages have been moved to their own package
sub-directories, for organizational reasons. Thus, to install GTK+,
you now should use `make -C gnome/gtk install' rather than
`make -C gnu/gtk install'

*** User configuration of packages is now isolated from build recipes
All packages now have a `config.mk' file in addition to the usual
`Makefile'. All user configuration of the package may be done in this
new file, separating it from the build recipe, which should not need
modification.

*** The new `gsrc' script facilitates package discovery
This script simplifies the process of searching for packages, printing
information about them and finding their GSRC directories.

*** GSRC has three new targets to use on packages
Usage: `make -C gnu/hello TARGET'

**** pkg-info
This target may be used to display useful information about a package,
including a description.

**** pkg-info-curt
This target is similar to `pkg-info' but in a short form which is
ideal for printing lists of packages

**** help-config
This target prints the configuration options available for a package.

** Changes in GSRC packages

*** 70 packages have been added to GSRC since the last release.

*** 69 packages have been updated in GSRC since the last release.

*** 56 builds that were previously broken have been fixed

builds are counted as incomplete. See TODO for more information.
