U.K. based NAG Ltd. Enters Partnership with
IBM to Market Computer Algebra System

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 8, 1991 - The International Conference on Industrial
and Applied Mathematics, ICIAM '91, served as the backdrop for the unveiling
of a new vendor partnership and the introduction of a new software system for
complex mathematical manipulation.

Under the terms of an agreement signed this week, IBM has assigned the copy-
right of its major new software product to The Numerical Algorithms Group Ltd.
(NAG) of Oxford, England. The IBM Computer algebra system, informally referred
to as "Scratchpad", is to be marketed by NAG under its own label as the Axiom
System.

IBM has a long history of research in computer algebra, and its researchers
have made many significant contributions to the field. Axiom is the powerful
new symbolic solver, developed at IBM's Yorktown Heights Research Facility
(New York) in collaboration with experts throughout the world.

Dr. James C. McGroddy, IBM vice president and director of research said of the
agreement that "it will make possible the general availability of an out-
standing set of mathematical tools in which IBM has invested significant
research effort over the years. The Agreement is good for NAG, good for IBM,
and good for the customer."

Axiom is to be marketed by The Numerical Algorithms Group Ltd. a not-for-
profit organization formed in 1970 to develop and distribute numerical and
statistical software, originally to the academic community. Today, it holds a
leading position worldwide providing mathematical and statistical software to
over 40,000 users in academia, government and industry. "Symbolic solvers have
come of age." said Dr. Brian Ford, founder and Director of NAG, "It is our
mission to provide the best software for the leading edge technical user and
Axiom is the perfect addition to our product portfolio."

Symbolic Solvers have revolutionized the way that many people think about the
computation of mathematical problems. Computers are now able to manipulate
formulae as well as data, giving results of a previously unattainable preci-
sion. The Symbolic Solver allows the machine and the user to communicate in
terms of algebraic formulae, in the language of the scientist. Both input and
output can be purely algebraic or in nnumerical form of specified precision.

For the novice, Axiom can work as a sophisticated desk calculator. The use of
hypertext and graphics in the User Interface makes it an easy product to learn
and use competently. Axiom also contains a mathematical knowledge base.
Instructors will find it useful within a full range of courses in algebra and
mathematics. For the expert, Axiom can perform complex mathematical computa-
tions with a broad range of built-in capabilities for use in the fields of
calculus, modern algebra, and number theory.

As a general mathematical tool, Axiom can be used in many areas of science,
engineering, education, and business. Scientists and engineers will be
attracted to Axiom as it allows them to build and save their own modules to
address problems of particular interest. The powerful data typing and
abstraction facilities will ensure that these modules will work with one
another (and that) new modules are compatible with those already existing.

NAG intends to provide an interface to the NAG Fortran Library of over 1,000
mathematical and statistical routines. IBM and NAG will co-operate on the
development of future enhancements and releases. The System runs on the IBM
RISC System/6000 and other IBM platforms. License fees will vary by machine
type or size.

NAG is dedicated to the production and distribution of high quality mathemat-
ical, statistical and graphical software for the scientist, mathematician,
engineer or other computer user with mathematical requirements. NAG's world
headquarters are located in Oxford with subsidiaries in Chicago and Munich.
