       DESCRIPTION

The program uses a large set of environment variables to
control its behavior. These are initialized when the
program is first started. Several environment files are
read to initialize variables specific to your site. Many of
these may be changed to suit your needs. Others are
dependent on either graphics hardware, file structures or
digitizer type. These must be changed with care.

The current value of a variable may be changed with this
command. To be useful, _v_a_r_i_a_b_l_e must be one of the
environment variables defined in the appendix (defaults.h).
You should follow its name with a space and the new value.
The value must be of the proper type, either numeric or
text. Text values will be read to the end of the line if
necessary. Numeric values should be either integers or
reals depending on the type indicated in the appendix. Copy
the value formats in the appendix.

Variable names are always uppercase words separated by
       underlines.
