The NBASTATS[tm] Archive ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Welcome to r.s.bb.p rec.sport.basketball.pro is an unmediated newsgroup for the purpose of discussing PROFESSIONAL basketball. Most of the discussion centers around the NBA, but European and Australian pro leagues are fair game, as well as Dream Team stuff, etc. A. FlameWars A Usenet/Internet standard. A well-worded, civil presentation will win more friends and influence than a vulgar, insulting post, but that never stops anyone on r.s.bb.p! Intelligence goes a long way. B. Woofing Woofing is a behavior in which a particular fan insists on the future superior performance of his favorite player(s)/team. For example, Trailblazer fans are prone to this, with such boasts as "Blazerz Rool!!". The Oliver Woofing Theorem (Jim Oliver) states that a team will do inversely proportionally well to the level/intensity of woofing. Reverse woofing (degrading your team) with a view to invoking the Woofing Theorem in a positive manner doesn't work, because the theorem predicts insincere woofing (this applies to bogus woofers trying to make a team lose). You can't win. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. NBA Rule Questions A. Illegal Defense [Note: the court is divided into various "areas" for the purpose of calling illegal defenses. These areas are basically where you'd expect them to be so I won't bother defining them] RULE NUMBER 12 -- FOULS AND PENALTIES Section I -- Illegal Defenses v2. Guidelines for Defensive Coverage [a. and b. prohibit defensive players from hanging around the key] c. An offensive player without the ball MAY NOT be double teamed from the weak side. ONLY the player with the ball may be double-teamed, by a weak side defensive player. Weak side and strong side distinctions shall not extend above the tip of the circle. d. When an offensive player, with or without the ball, takes a position above the foul line, the defensive player may be no farther (toward the baseline) than the "middle defensive area'. Defensive player may enter and re-enter the "inside lane" as many times as he desires, so long as he does not exceed 2.9 seconds. e. When a weak side offensive player is above the free throw line extended, his defensive man may be no lower than the 'middle defensive area' extended for more than 2.9 seconds. When a weak side offensive player is below the free throw line extended, his defensive man must vacate the "inside lane" unless his man is positioned adjacent (posted up) to the 3-second lane extended. When a weak side offensive player is above the tip of the circle, his defensive man must be no lower than the 'upper defensive area' for more than 2.9 seconds. When a strong side offensive player is above the tip of the circle extended, his defensive man may be no lower than the free throw line extended (upper defensive area) for more than 2.9 seconds. When a strong side offensive player is above the free throw line extended (Upper Defensive Area), his defensive man may be no lower than the 'middle defensive area' for more than 2.9 seconds. When a strong side offensive player is below the free throw line extended (Middle Defensive Area), his defensive man has no restrictions. He may double-team anyone with or without the ball. Should his man relocate to a 'spot' above the free throw line extended, he has 2.9 seconds to follow him into the proper defensive area. In all of the situations above, the defensive player may always go and double-team the ball. [f., g., and h. describe more restrictions on defensive location and how defensive players must follow their man.] i. A double team is when two or more defenders aggressively pursue a player with the ball to a position close enough for a held ball to occur. Failure to comply with paragraphs a through i will be adjudged an Illegal Defense. The original question that started this discussion was about "pentuple teaming." Not only is it legal to pentuple (or quintuple) team the player with the ball, it is also legal to pentuple team a player without the ball (assuming that the various location restrictions are met, e.g. if all 5 offensive players are on the strong side and are below the free throw line extended). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Illegal Offense RULE NO. 10 -- VIOLATIONS AND PENALTIES Section XV -- Isolation If the offensive team stations three or more players above the tip of the circle, on the weak side, a violation shall be called. PENALTY: Loss of ball. Ball is awarded to the opponent at the tip of the circle extended. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. 0.3 seconds at end of quarter The last minute of each quarter is measured in tenths of a second (instead of just seconds). From a dead-ball situation, there must be at least 0.3 seconds on the clock for a player to catch-and-shoot and have it count. A tip-in shot is valid with less than 0.3 seconds left. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- III. NBA Playoff System A. Initial Seedings The top eight teams from each conference make the playoffs. The division winner with the best record is seeded #1. The other division winner is seeded #2. The rest of the teams are seeded in order of Won-loss records. The brackets are resolved as follows: Division Winner #1--------| |---------| #8--------| | |--------| #4--------| | | |---------| | #5--------| | Conference Champ |------------------- Division Winner #2--------| | |---------| | #7--------| | | |--------| #3--------| | |---------| #6--------| B. Tie-breakers TWO-TEAM TIE 1) Results head-to-head. 2) Winning percentage within conference. 3) Winning percentage within division (only if both in same division). 4) Winning percentage against playoff teams in own conference. 5) Point differential in games between the two teams. MULTIPLE-TEAM TIE 1) Winning percentage among all teams tied. 2) Winning percentage within conference. 3) Winning percentage within division (only if from same division). 4) Winning percentage against playoff teams in own conference. 5) Point differential between offense and defense. (Huh?) C. Home Court Advantage The home court advantage always goes to the team with the better record. Ties broken as per B above. D. Why the Finals are different. The finals go 2-3-2, for travel reasons (long distance between Eastern and Western Conference champions; don't ask why for a Chicago-Minnesota series). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- IV. NBA Lottery/Draft System >From the NBA News, Volume 48, Number 7, dated November 15, 1993: Under the new system, 14 ping-pong balls numbered 1 through 14 will be placed in a drum, with four balls drawn to the top. There are 1001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn out of 14, without regard to the order in which the balls are drawn. Prior to the Lottery, 1000 combinations will be assigned to each of the 11 non-Playoff teams participating in the Lottery. In order to make the odds work, one combination will not be assigned. If that combination is drawn, it will be discarded and a new combination drawn. The team with the worst record in the league will be assigned 250 combinations (giving it a 25% [chance] of drawing the first pick), the team with the second-worst record 203 combinations (a 20.3% chance of drawing the first pick), and on down to the team with the best record amoung the Lottery teams being assigned five combinations (a 0.5% chance of drawing the first pick). After drawing four balls from the drum, a chart listing all 1000 assigned combinations and the team "holding" each combination will be consulted. Thus, for example, if balls 2, 4, 9 and 11 are drawn, the chart would be consulted to indicate which team was assigned that combination of numbers (again, regardless of the order in which the balls are drawn). After determining which team holds the winning combination, the drawing will be repeated until the second and third picks are determined. The remaining selections, picks number 4 through 11, will then be based upon the inverse order of regular season records. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- V. The Usenet Mock Draft Conducted each year by Craig Simpson (craig@unx.sas.com). This net cooperative effort involves r.s.bb.pro netters to take on the role of General Manager as though they were choosing players in a real NBA draft. Scouting reports on the top college players are solicited, and the mock GM's take these and their chosen team's needs into account as they select players. Some Usenet GMs have proven themselves a better judge of available talent than the real ones. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- VI. NBA Salary Cap System Brave Soul still needed. Teams over the cap cannot sign new players (draftees and free agents) to more than the NBA minimum ($150,000), unless they get a very creative accountant. Teams under the cap are not so restricted. Once all the new players are signed, the team can offer ANYTHING to the existing players (can you say 90 million for 9 years?). Trades must match in kind and number of players. Sort of. Brave soul still needed to explain the legalese. There is a "base year" salary, which is different from the actual current salary. In otherwords, Boston cannot save the megabucks it is paying to Mrs. Lewis, only half of Reggie's base year of 400K. Or something like that. THAT SAID, here is the wonderful ardous work Patricia Bender submitted recently: From the Dallas Morning News (January 28, 1994) Top 10 salaries (in millions) 1. David Robinson (SA) $5.74 2. Buck Williams (Por) $5.05 3. Vlade Divac (LAL) $4.133 4. Robert Parish (Bos) $4.0 5. Ron Harper (LAC) $4.0 6. Michael Jordan (Chi) $4.0 (still paid) 7. Shaquille O'Neal (Orl) $3.9 8. Patrick Ewing (NY) $3.825 9. John Williams (Cle) $3.786 10. Sam Perkins (Sea) $3.587 Team Payrolls The salary cap for the '93-'94 season is $15.175 million. Only one team - Dallas - is under the cap. Team Payroll (rounded to nearest $100,000) 1. Cleveland Cavaliers $23.7 2. Portland Trail Blazers $23.5 3. Atlanta Hawks $22.5 4. Los Angeles Lakers $22.5 5. New York Knicks $22.1 6. Phoenix Suns $21.6 7. Golden State Warriors $21.2 8. Boston Celtics $21.2 9. Orlando Magic $20.8 10. Los Angeles Clipers $20.2 11. New Jersey Nets $20.1 12. Chicago Bulls $19.6 13. Dallas Mavericks $14.3 [These are the figures listed on the cap for this season. Sometimes these numbers reflect the player's average salary over the length of his contract rather than what he makes this season. For accounting and trade purposes, these are the salaries recognized by the league.] [Also, just because a player is listed doesn't mean that he is receiving a salary (suspensions) - these are what counts against the team's cap. The NBASTATS[tm] Project The NBASTATS Project is an ongoing effort to continuously compile NBA statistics. Each team has a volunteer net reporter, who sends in a standardized TEMPLATE, which is subsequently added to the database at the ftp site. Then each Reporter posts a standard BOXSCORE to our newsgroup, rec.sport.basketball.pro. In addition, team rosters are maintained. ===>SEE section XI. The NBASTATS[tm] Archive. The NBASTATS[tm] Project was originated & conceived by James D. Oliver III, M.D. The following people can provide more info: oliver@athena.mit.edu (Jim Oliver) nates@ll.mit.edu (Nate Smith) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- VIII.
