Short: UK Pocket Directory v1.9 Author: stef@psionworld.net (Stefan Smith), slitchfield@cix.co.uk (Steve Litchfield) URL: http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/ Uploader: psion-adm@nic.funet.fi Type: s5/misc/db UK Pocket Directory v1.9 for the Psion Series 5 ================================================ (C) UK 1997,1998 Stefan Smith & Steve Litchfield (See details at the bottom of this file, but basically Stefan's the main man for the Directory database itself and Steve handles the registrations and runs the web site distribution) For Changes from the previous version, please section 0.1b in the Directory Released as shareware February 7th 1998 ... Registration address (send cheque for 10 pounds - payable to Steve Litchfield - or equivalent to): Steve Litchfield 22 Grays Crescent Woodley Berks RG5 3EN or register electronically on Compuserve with GO SWREG no. 13592, or with a credit card at http://www.swregnet.com/1334p.htm UK Pocket Directory update information and new versions can be found at http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/ If you have trouble with that address, try www.3-lib.co.uk instead. There's also Stefan's 'News' page at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/StefanSmith1/ UK Pocket Directory is shareware. This does not make it a free program! Yes, you can give it to friends and colleagues. Yes, you can keep a copy on your Psion without registering and we won't mind too much. But please play fair with shareware: - If you find it genuinely useful - If you want to reward Stefan and myself for our hard work in compiling it - If you want to have a say in what categories are included in future versions ... then you should register. It's only a small one-off fee and you're then registered for life. All information in the database is collected, filtered and compiled from public domain sources or from hobbyists in various fields with their kind permission. Installation. ------------ If you unzipped UK Pocket Directory OK, you should have ended up with 5 separate files. On the Series 5 disk you wish to install on, make sure viewing of the \System folder is turned on and then go into \System\Apps and make a new folder \Director . Thus you'll now have a folder whose path reads something like \System\Apps\Director . Use PsiWin to COPY all the files into this new folder. A good way to do this is to highlight all files (by clicking on the first one, then shift-clicking the last one in the list) and then dragging and dropping them all in one go using the RIGHT mouse button. Note that you DON'T want to CONVERT any of these files, they're all already in Series 5 format! Basically, stick everything in \Systen\Apps\Director and you can't go far wrong! 8-) If all went well, you should now have a new "Directory" icon on your Extras bar. Copying information into another Psion application -------------------------------------------------- Simply highlight the information you wish to copy and use either Control-C or the silk-screen Copy button. Paste into the other app. Hints and tips -------------- Before installing UK Pocket Directory on your Psion it is worth bearing in mind that there is a slight performance penalty in using the database from a Compact Flash (CF) drive. The performance loss is only marginal, but is worth remembering. As at v1.9, a full directory search on a CF disk takes about 7 seconds. On the internal RAM disk, this is reduced to a fairly fast 4 seconds. Note also that the searching process sometimes takes place *without* a flashing 'Searching' message etc. This is due to the way Psion implemented the help engine software. You can tell how many matches the software is finding by looking at the record no. legend (bottom-centre of the screen), which will say 1/n, where n is the number of matches so far. Suggesting new data types for the Directory ------------------------------------------- If you have any ideas, suggestions or comments, please send them to Stef at stef@psionworld.net Small print: ------------ 1) To speed up registrations, you can quote your email address for quick return of your registration code, or use the Internet RegNet or Compuserve SWREG scheme. 2) On-line support for UK Pocket Directory and other versions can be found on the World-Wide-Web at http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/ If you have trouble with that, try www.3-lib.co.uk instead. 3) If you give UK Pocket Directory to a friend (as is encouraged with shareware!), then make sure you do *not* give your friend your "Director.reg" registration file, as this is unique to you and contains *your* name, and subsequent piracy will tell the world who started the outbreak! 4) Thanks to all the contributors out there, who have supplied ideas, support, bug-reports, data etc. You are too numerous to mention! 5) Don't worry that you're registering with me (Steve Litchfield) direct. I *do* pass half the proceeds to Stefan Smith. Honest! 8-) Contact information: -------------------- Data suggestions, corrections, comments and queries: Stefan Smith (stef@psionworld.net) Installation problems, registration, distrubution and availablility: Steve Litchfield (slitchfield@cix.co.uk)
