Short: Encrypt-it! v1.2 Author: csutora@usa.net (Peter Csutora) URL: http://members.tripod.com/~csutora/ Uploader: psion-adm@nic.funet.fi Type: s5/apps/file ***************************************************** Encrypt-it! for the Psion Series 5 v1.2 February 25, 1998 ***************************************************** Please read this file, it contains important information about the program. I kept this readme short because most people don't like long manuals. Please also read the Help file included with the program. WHAT'S NEW? (HISTORY) ********************* v1.2: * The file format has been changed! It affects both the header and the ciphertext. Please read the "Upgrading" section if you don't want to lose any old encrypted files! * The program is now flying like a jet. It is now up to 5-7x faster, some examples: 36711 bytes: low security: before 26s, now 5s; high security: before 1min 41s, now 25s. 80000 bytes: low: before 54s, now 9s, high: before 3min 36s, now 49s. :-) * The Quick Update is now better from the system screen. You just tell at the encryption whether the file is a standard file (has a header), or a VReader5 file. This will be remembered later (written to the header), and you won't launch VReader5 again when e.g. Agenda is needed. :-) * The Quick Update will now recognize if a file has been changed, and if it is unmodified, it won't recypt it, just deletes it after the launched application exits. This is very useful with files that you don't change just read like VReader5 documents, passwords, etc. * The password size is now limited to 16 characters, and the password is always masked. This doesn't affect security because of the hash function. * The file is now decrypted into the folder where its encrypted version is located. This will prevent all the confusion. * New file types for Quick Update: Concept!, Timeplan, Plan, MyCar, S5Bank, ABP, PsiBio. Mail me if you need any other types. * Other minor changes, e.g. two different types of beeps. v1.1: Cooperation with Jean-Luc Damnet's excellent VReader5. New file types added: Sketch, Record, Comms, DP5Bank, Statistics and Chess. "Go!" button in the main dialog replaces encrypt/decrypt buttons. The # sign is now added to the filename. v1.0 final: Quick Update for Data, Word, Sheet, Agenda and Program files. 300% speed increase. Preferences dialog added. Two encryption modes, high and low security type. v1.0 beta3: Quick Decrypt. Password masking under 16 characters. Password checking (checksum). The file format has been changed. v1.0 beta: First release: Dec 26, 1997 INSTALLATION ************ For existing users: IMPORTANT! The file format has been changed. The new version won't recognize files encrypted with the older versions of the program. Please decrypt all your files with the old version you have, then delete the encrypted files. Now you can install the new version, and encrypt your files again. To upgrade please delete all files in the Encrypt folder except of encrypt.reg, then copy the new ones into that folder. Please make sure that you also deleted encrypt.ini. For new users: 1) Make sure you can see the "System" folder (see "Preferences" from the System shell) 2) Create the folder of \SYSTEM\APPS\ENCRYPT (on either C: or D:) 3) Copy (using PsiWin 2.0 or another method) all the files except of this manual into this new folder. 4) Make sure that you have installed the file sysram1.opx (version dated Sept 18 1997 or newer) into the c:\system\opx folder. If not, you can download it from the Encrypt-it! homepage. Please, copy this file into the correct folder. 5) You're now ready to run ENCRYPT-IT! It's icon should appear on the Extras bar, so just click it! ABOUT THE PROGRAM ***************** The use of the program should be obvious. However, it contains a Help that will answer most questions. Please also read the frequently asked questions section at my homepage if you have problems. The program has been fully tested and appears to have no bugs, but if you find any or have a comment/suggestion for future versions then I welcome your input e-mail on: csutora@usa.net Updates of Encrypt-it! (and my other programs) can be found on my web page at: http://members.tripod.com/~csutora/ REGISTRATION ************ Encrypt-it! for Psion Series 5 is a SHAREWARE program. Shareware means that you have a trial period of 20 days in which you test the program to see if you like it and want to use it. If you do want to keep it, you must register with me. Registration is very simple, and it can be done in two ways: 1. Send 10 US dollars or 7 UK pounds (or another foreign currency plus 10% extra for the exchange) in a good envelope to my home address. Please check my web page for my current home address, or see the Help file. Alternatively, if you are residing in the USA, you can send me a personal check or money order upon $10. If you want to receive your password via regular mail, include a self-addressed and stamped envelope as well. 2. You can register with you credit card through the excellent RegNet Service. Just go to their homepage dedicated to my program, fill in your details, and that's it! Secure forms are also available. Price with credit card payment: $16 (RegNet keeps $6.10 for the service). The web page is: http://www.swregnet.com/1666p.htm Soon after registration you will receive a password by E-mail (or snail mail if you send an envelope) for the name you supply. All you have to do then is to type exactly that name and password in the registration dialog. Registration will remove the "Nag" screen (Registration reminder). Also, registered users will receive an E-mail whenever a new version is available for downloading. Of course, you won't have to re-register for any future versions, they will be FREE. Note: even though this is a shareware program, it is fully working, and there are no time limits, restrictions, etc. But the price of the program is so cheap that everyone can afford. Please play fair with shareware. By registering Encrypt-it! you will contribute to the education of my 3 years old daughter.
