This week's bulletin was written by Ingemar Sandberg Electronic Edition edited by George Wood. Packet Radio BID SCDX2070 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPACE--The American space shuttle is due to be launched on Wednesday November 22nd, on a five day secret military mission, although it looks like it will be delayed. According to "Aviation Week and Space Technology" magazine, the payload will be a signal intelligence gathering satellite, weighing nearly 6000 pounds. The magazine says the satellite will monitor voice, telemetry, and other signals from Soviet military installations, for the National Security Agency. You can try to listen to the shuttle mission on the frequencies listed in our free publication "Communications in Space". For example, Shuttle Mission control is listed on 11210 kHz and Ascension Island tracking on 20186 kHz. Shuttle communications are listed on 259.7 MHz. Shuttle launches and mission communications are often relayed in the ham radio bands by amateur radio clubs at NASA installations. Since this is a secret mission, there may be no relay, but you might try frequencies between 14250 and 14350 kHz, in single side band. TELEVISION--The Swedish Performing Rights Society STIM has forbidden cable operators in this country from broadcasting Super Channel from the 1st of December. The organization claims Super has not paid royalties. STIM has been severely by Swedish community radio stations for demanding extremely high royalties. CNN has been having problems getting onto cable systems in West Germany, also because of an authority after money. CNN has been granted a licence to operate by each of Germany's states, or laender. But the German PTT, the Bundespost, has refused to give permission, demanding that CNN pay a fee, but forbidding the broadcaster from recovering the fee by charging hotels and other commercial users for the service. So CNN has broken off negotiations. BELGIUM--BRT broadcasts in German as follows: Mondays-Fridays at 09:30- 10:00 on 6035, 9925 and 11695 kHz and at 11:30-11:40 on 9925 and 25645 kHz. On Mondays-Saturdays at 20:00-20:30 on 1512 and 5910 kHz. The BRT is heard on the new frequency of 13675 kHz during the English broadcast at 18:30-18:59. (Aris Giannarelis, Greece) Updating SCDX-2062, RTBF starts its broadcasts in French at 11:00 on 9925 and 25645 kHz. (Gerhard Siegbert, GDR) BULGARIA--French from Radio Sofia to Europe is now: at 07:00 on 11720, 17825 and 15160 kHz, at 18:30 on 11720 and 15330 kHz and at 21:00 on 9700, 7155 and 6070 kHz. French to North America is at 23:30 and 01:00 on 9700 and 11680 kHz. Radio Korea plans to broadcast to the Americas via RCI in Korean English, and Spanish. (Moses Vasanthan, India) There are some changes concerning the 22:00-23:00 hrs broadcast from Radio Canada International to Western Europe. The frequency of 9760 kHz has been added for the whole transmission and 15325 kHz ceases at 22:30. Thus between 22:00 and 22:30 hrs, 15325, 11945 and 9760 kHz are in use and at 22:30-23:00 11945 and 9760 kHz. At 12:00 hrs RCI broadcasts to Asia on 11955 and 15210 kHz. The 13:00 hrs transmission to Asia and the Pacific has been discontinued. This is just a joke, and not to be taken seriously. The station has been broadcasting with 500 kW since the first day of operation. (Derek Walker and Michael John Rzepecki-Raimes) JAPAN--German from Radio Japan at 06:00-06:30 and French at 06:30-07:00 are now on 15325 kHz direct from Japan and on 17835 from the Gabon relay.
