(Marcel Rommerts, the Netherlands) GUATEMALA--Radio Centri is a new station on 1480 kHz. ("mv-eko", Sweden) INDIA--Back in SCDX-2006, Supratik Sanatani reported on special All India Radio weather bulletins to expeditions in the Himalayas. Now he tells us about new frequencies for these transmissions, which give code names such as "Zulu" and "Aztec" for the various expeditions. These can be heard at 12:15 hrs on 3905 and 7280 kHz. (Supratik Sanatani, India) IRELAND--Under Ireland's new broadcasting law, there are to be some 2 dozen local radio stations on VHF-FM. The first have started. (Shoy Selovah, Israel) UNITED KINGDOM--The BBC World Service may have to leave its home at Bush House in London, because of what "The Times" calls "a blunder by the Treasury". Next year the rent on the building is expected to triple or more from the current GBP 3 million a year. The increase may force the BBC to find alternative accommodation. Yet five years ago the Treasury blocked a plan to buy the building for the low sum of GBP 30 million. Since then its value has risen to around GBP 140 million. Should the World Service move, the alternatives are moving to Broadcast House when those premises are vacated by domestic radio in the late 1990's, or building something new. ("The Times" via Jason Lambert, England) Britain's Department of Trade and Industry has decided to allocate 558 kHz to the multi-ethnic station Spectrum Radio. This frequency is currently used by the offshore pirate Radio Caroline, which recently returned to the air. (Friedrich Buettner, West Germany) INTERNATIONAL WATERS--We recently reported on the conviction against Abie Nathan, the founder of the Voice of Peace, for meeting members of the Palestine Liberation Organization. The other side of the Israeli political spectrum, the groups supporting the Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank, have now started their own station on a ship off the coast of Tel Aviv. The station is called Channel 7, and it broadcasts on 918 kHz. (Shoy Selovah) UNOFFICIAL RADIO--As the troubles in Sri Lanka continue, a number of broadcasts have been heard from Tamil separtists, some apparently originating from India. BBC Monitoring now reports broadcasts from Sri Lanka's JVP guerillas, who oppose concessions to the Tamils. A transmission in the Singalese language was heard on October 4th at 13:00-13:30 hrs on 4360 kHz. (BBC Monitoring) Radio Venceremos, which supports the FMLN guerillas in El Salvador, has been observed with regular broadcasts at 00:00, 12:15, and 18:00 hrs on a variable frequency around 6295-6340 kHz. The station also announced a frequency of 3.5 MHz, as well as 99 MHz at 02:00 hrs. Neither has been confirmed.
