"Doc" Smith From: JWenn To: SF-LOVERS%rutgers:EDU cc: JWenn, tanelorn!david%CS.ORST:EDU "Doc" Smith defines space opera. Heros are larger than life. Villians are blacker than space, and Weapons are humongously powerful. And the writing, frankly, sucked. In all fairness, the best of "Doc" Smith fairly good. And if you are willing to overlook the prose, you get the straight "sense of wonder" stuff, 180 proof. I have always prefered his Lensmen series, since it gives maximum scope for his plots.
