Subject: [*] Enigmatic Movements 1.0
What is Enigmatic Movements?
The object of Enigmatic Movements is to move the colored tiles until each
row or column has the same color. You can choose the boardsize between 4x4
(piece of cake) and 10x10 (very difficult). Once you get the hang of it,
it's very easy to complete the board, but the real challenge is to do this
in the least number of moves possible ! The game also keeps statistics of
10 different players, allows you to choose between different sets of
tiles, and lets you choose the background color...
Enigmatic Movements is US$15 shareware. Users can register on-line or with
the Kagi Register application.
Requirements: Enigmatic Movements should run on any Mac or compatible (68K
and PowerPC native) with system 7.0 or better. If it doesn't, please let
me know !!! Minimum RAM requirement is 1MB, preferred is 1500KB, when
you're screen is set to millions of colors...
Availability
Enigmatic Movements 1.0 is now available for download at
, and very soon on all
major Mac shareware ftp sites.

Subject: [*] EyeQ, Browser Multimedia Manager
Fast Track improves the throughput rate of multimedia file delivery over
the Internet. With the InterVU Network and Fast Track, browsing embedded
videos on the World Wide Web becomes fun and easier.
For the average user, InterVU-hosted files delivered with Fast Track are
delivered at 80% or better of rated modem speed, rather than the typical
20% to 30% of modem speed. The Fast Track feature measures the InterVU
delivery rate from each InterVU delivery center to your computer. At the
end of the test a video server is selected to provide you with the best
overall video download performance based upon your Internet connection.
Each time you click on a video or other multimedia file which is hosted on
the InterVU Network, you are automatically redirected to your optimal
delivery center to receive the highest performance from your Internet
connection.

Here is version 2.0e of fontasee, I have added many features and options
and made it 32 bit clean.
Version 2.0e changes - it is now freeware
1. added buttons where useful, no longer require you to goto the menus
when working with edit field for banners and headings.
2. added many new menu options and condensed some.
3. Fixed problems going to a 32 bit clean compiler, did not like my old
workarounds and caused many unpredictable problems.
4. Converted program to freeware - use it if it helps
5. Added a mouse locator - always active and will show you where the
mouse is on the screen (coordinates)
6. Added an Alpbetical listing (split by letter, all fonts under that
letter will be a sub menu) Also now has ascending and decending menus
for fonts. When printing banners and headings this allows you to select
fonts from the pull down menus rather than having to remember the font
numbers.
7. And many other new options.

The Story:

world, the United Earth Government, in a commemorative gesture,
commissioned an armada of space ships to explore the universe. Shortly
after embarking on their quest, the armada was attacked by a mysterious
alien battle cruiser. In response to this unprovoked destruction of one of
the armada's ships, two assault fighters were launched to engage the enemy.
The alien battle cruiser soon turned to flee through a nearby worm hole,
with the two fighters in pursuit. Now trapped in another dimension, the
two fighters are faced with the continuous onslaught of hordes of alien
craft.

Zap'T'Balls is to destroy all the bouncing balls on any given level. When a
large
ball is hit, it splits into two medium sized balls; a medium sized ball splits
into two smaller balls; and when the smaller balls are hit, they disappear. Once

No trouble. MacOS 8.0 is a complete new install, replacing everything
that was in 7.5. Back up your 7.5 System folder beforehand, and do a
clean install. Copy over only the extensions you need for your applications.
If are able to a full backup, and boot from the 8.0 (or 8.1) CD. It is a
good time to do a reformat of the disk before the install, or at least
perform a defragmentation on the disk.
Good luck. Greetings to St. Albans (I grew up in Bricket Wood, though
I'm now based in France - sorry can't pop round to give a hand!)

Subject: 5300 printer port problem
Hello brilliant and generous experts! My PowerBook 5300 is having a problem=
identifying the printer. I choose the appropriate driver, and select=
Printer-Modem port. When I try to print using a StyleWriter 1200 or 1500,=
the printer whirs a bit--but then PrintMonitor stops on the Identifying=
Printer stage, and a box comes up with the message:
The printer is not responding. Make sure
the printer's power cable is plugged in. [it is]
Also make sure the printer is connected
to the modem port or use the Chooser to
select the printer port. [there's only one port]
I last used this port successfully with an ImageWriter in Philadelphia about=
three months ago. Since then I've been traveling, and only tried it once,=
with an HP Laserjet in San Francisco, on a Farallon PhoneNet connector.=
That didn't work, but I thought it was an AppleTalk problem.
I think I have narrowed it down to something wrong with the modem/printer=
port itself. I've already tried the following in seemingly countless permut=
ations:
- three different cables
- three different printers (SW 1200 and 1500, and a LW)
- both OS8.0 and System 7.5.5 (on separate partitions)
- AppleTalk on and off
- AppleShare, File Sharing and the like installed and not installed.=20
The Apple LaserWriter Utility failed to find a printer (then I switched to a=
different computer and it worked fine). In desperation I've even sprayed=
WD40 into the port.
Is there anything else I can do before concluding that either the port has a=
bad connection, or that there is something wrong with the board somewhere?=
I live in Cambodia where there are no expert technicians and few spare=
parts, and I am loath to open my baby up if there's little chance of fixing=
it.
Is there any other fairly simple way of connecting a printer to a PowerBook?=
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

This error message is not nearly as specific as it sounds, and there are
some other problems that can generate it (ie it's not unique to machines
that have no FPU). Someone more knowledgeable than I will probably be
able to point you to a Tech-note or something that tells you more.
I'm afraid that your best option is to try and deal with it the way you

That's awful! I wonder why Apple changed this...

Not sure...
>Does anyone have a recommended free or shareware replacement that

There is a shareware program called AppDisk that is probably good for your
situation. It allows you to make a RAM disk as necessary (i.e., without
rebooting) and it stores the RAM disk into a file when you quit AppDisk, so
that it is restored the next time you run it. The best thing for you might
be to put an alias of it in the Startup Items folder. I'm pretty sure it's
in the info-mac archives.
You could also use Shrinkwrap to do the same thing. I think ShrinkWrap is
commercial now, though (bought by Alladin, www.alladinsys.com).
Keep in mind, though, that both solutions will not let you boot your
machine from the RAM disk, and you cannot optimize (for example) the drive
that the RAM disk file is contained on. Hopefully, someone else knows of a
better solution!

All you need to do is select the 'Connect via' to Appletalk (MacIP) in
the Tcp/Ip control panel. Set up the dummy IP address, and you're on.
You can even manage to resolve IP names by setting up hosts file (there
is a button on the tcp panel to select the file) which lists against
names and IP addresses. If you don't do that, you'll only be able to
access your web server through your numeric IP address or 127.0.0.1
If you have problems to use MacIP over your AppleTalk connection, you
can even set up a dummy Appletalk device, so you don't tie up a serial
port, or send packets down your ethernet network. There are a couple
of drivers available on the network, I've used them both successfully.
One is called Dummy adev from the University of Melbourne (I have v2b1)
which is available on the site that distributes CAP Columbia Appletalk
Package. The other one is called Remote Only, and is from Apple, and
is available from the Apple ftp site under Open Transport 1.1.1 Extras.
Simply place one of those extensions in your extensions folder, and
then you'll have a new device available in the Appletalk control panel.
Select that, in addition to MacIP in Tcp/ip and you are truely standalone!
I find that Location Manager (Mac OS 8.1) is invaluable for switching between
this and other configurations in a flash.
Good Luck !

Yes, you can use a really cool app called CU-SeeMe. It was developed by
some folks at Cornell, and it is free (their version is free; a commercial
version is also distributed under the same name). The web site is
.
If you are using a modem to connect to the Internet, or if the connections
between you and your brother are extremely slow, than you may find yourself
having a very low frame rate, choppy audio conversation. If this is the
case, try conferencing with the video turned off to see if that improves
it. Also, lower the rate of the audio by selecting a compressor that sends
smaller block sizes per second of audio.

>Has anyone installed 98 yet? Care to share experiences, cautions, etc?
I have installed Office 98. I've used it for about a week or two. I love
it. The applications open in about 4-5 seconds. The files are the same as
those produced by Office on Windows, so absolutely all formatting, fields,
graphics, and so on, cross over between platforms without any translation
needed at all. The little assistant (what we get instead of that awful
paperclip on Windows) is so cute I sometimes start Word just so my daughter
can watch the assistant for awhile. (I know that sounds stupid, but wait
until you see him!)
It is very friendly. You can go into a mode where you are producing Word
5.1a documents, even using the Word 5.1a toolbar, if you need or want to.
It is amazingly easy to install. I have finally let Word 5.1a go, as I
really don't need it any more. Word starts so fast that I no longer even
need special little word processing utilities.
If you have specific questions, please ask. I am extremely happy with
Office 98.

Subject: [Q] How to combine modem bandwidth
I have created a small LAN in my apt building and we have 4 modems
connected to 4 powermacs. Has anyone ever heard of a method by which we
could share the bandwidth of these modems? What I have in mind is this:
each of the macs could log on (which can be done remotely via timbuktu)
to its isp. A piece of software could then run on each of these machines
to cooperatively distribute the requests for data as needed by the
group. This would dramatically improve bandwidth for the individual at
times and would never diminish the bandwidth for anyone.
I would love to hear what people think of this? If there are no
solutions, would any programmers care to discuss how this might be done?

I have tryed just to copy the control panel but the pref. file remains the

The reason that I would like this is I love CSModuals but I have so many they

I would like to separate them to:
1- Those I use a lot.
2- Those I need but use less.
So if you have a program, a simple solution or even some resedit type of thing.
Info-mac seems to know how to do anything and everything.

Al, once again, you have astutely called a duck a real quacker! This is
even more amazing when you realize every Windoze machine comes with a
10/100 EtherNet Card since most network gurus are upgrading their hubs and
routers to 100BaseWhatever. Multimedia and video conferencing over
networks is here, and Apple lost sight of the transportation vehicle.
Ironically, Apple's QuickTime caused it to happen.
BTW, on DoD's Desktop V small computer requirements contract, we can outfit
our desktop PeeCees with 10/100BaseWhatchamacallits PCI cards for $19.
That's 19 Bucks, Sports Fans! Hmmmm.
On a similar note, I've just networked by two Macs with 10BaseT. Got a
nice little Kingston EtherRX SOHO hub ($40) connecting my 8600 and IIsi
(DayStar 040). The 8600 is running IPNetRouter (still in alpha, but
getting stronger with each release) so both machines can surf the 'net via
the 8600's modem. Use the hub approach so when Daughter #1 returns home
from college, her PowerBook 520 can plug right in. Next stop, sharing the
Espon 800 printer. Stay tune for Film at 11!
Al, there's hope yet for us olde Mac guys! But, not for product design at
Apple.

While not specifically a solution for the G3 I have had to do many such
"media" conversions. There are external adapters to do exactly what you
want. I actually had to go the other direction 10Base-T in the walls and
10Base-2 (thin net) built into the computer.
There are some more esoteric ones as well, 10Base-FL, etc.
Hope this helps.

Many "Gates" machines have MS Word, also--just a newer version of it. They
should be able to read your file with their version of MS Word, without you
needing to convert it to a different format first. Even if they don't have
Word, I believe Word Pad (an accessory that comes with Windows 95) will
read the file. You _may_ need to save it in Word for Windows 2.0 format
first, though. That should be an option for you in your Save As... box, the
same way you chose RTF.
If all else fails, go through and replace smart quotes with dumb ones. Use
the Find/Replace feature to do this. Then save the file in "Windows" text
format and they should be able to read it.
BTW, RTF (rich text format) was developed by Microsloth. And you wonder why
your file got munged?! :)

It depends on how much formatting you have done. If it's just basic bolding
and underlining and centering type stuff, you can save as Rich Text Format
(RTF) and it should look pretty good on his machine.
Of course, the prince of cross-platform compatibility these days is Office
98. Your Word and Excel and PowerPoint files will be exactly the same
format on either Mac or Windows, and both sides can open the same files
without translation. If you have some money to spend on the project this
would be my recommendation. Next to that, you can save in various flavors
of MS Word right from the "Save As" dialog in ClarisWorks, including saving
as "WinWord" format. That might do it for you right there.

I'm using a 9600/300 running System 8. I've got a modem, printer (Epson

tried an A-B switch but it caused crashing regardless of which two devices

hang-up in the start-up process as if it were searching for something. So
right now, my printer is not being used at all because I've got the tablet
hooked up.
I'm trying to get the two devices working smoothly together without having

either. Has anyone experienced this? How do I go about hooking the two
serial port devices up and working together the right way?

there are instructions in the personal websharing readme files that tell

which goes nowhere but back to your system but it appears that you're

Version 1.5 is better than the one on the OS8 CD.

It was mentioned at the time that Internet Config 1.4 might be the culprit
and one should avoid it like you would any x86 processor.
Well, my experience has been dramatically different. Not only are Internet
Config, Eudora, Netscape and Fetch very happy to work with each other, even
changing to a different set of IC preferences on the fly works great. Don't
even have to exit any of the applications to switch ISP's. I just
installed Location Manager and it makes the switch even faster.
So what makes my machine start crashing while using any TCP/IP connection?
Kaleidoscope. I've disabled almost every INIT and cdev *manually*, not
using EM because it just doesn't show you everything. I leave enough to
enable an ISP connection. Add Kaleidoscope and the crashes start happening.
This is with v1.8.1.
Anyone else experience or can replicate this?
